John Crichton felt the sun's rays spread across his face for the first time in many days. There was something different about it this time. He had encountered many suns like this one before. They reminded him of Earth's sun. But this time it was his sun. The glowing light was the same that he had known all of his life. Until the farscape project. He stood on the terrace of Moya, a ship like no other that anyone on Earth had ever seen. A living ship, a leviathon. The two worlds he had come to know were finally meeting and that thought was terrifying. He missed his home so much. His father, his friends, a normal life. But that was the past and now there was more to consider. He had new friends, a new family, and Aeryn. There was Aeryn. They had been through so much together and yet it seemed as if they had hardly moved forward. He thought he knew how she felt. She definitely knew how he felt. Things had happened to separate them just as it seemed they were r! eady. Too many times one had been afraid. He knew that they had one last chance. As Earth grew nearer and filled the ship's window, John Crichton was afraid.
She watched him with intense fascination and fear. The question she had been asking herself for days kept creeping into her thoughts. She didn't want to answer that one, not now. But very soon she would have to. He would ask and there would be no looking back. This man had been the best and worst thing that had ever happened to her. He had awakened something inside of her that she had fought with all of her might to suppress. John Crichton had made her whole, a process that had both killed and brought her back to life. They had lost everything and found something better. The one person with whom she could connect with most had found his home again. She had no home. Earth, his home, spread out in front of her. Once again she was afraid.
John stood and walked silently from the room before her eyes. She wanted to cry out to him, let him know that she would never leave him. But she had left him. She had died and lost everything she loved again. Even though she had returned, the memory still burned deep inside her. She stood and followed him.
The once chaotic halls of Moya were quiet now. The others had found their homes. She missed them dearly. Something inside told her that they had earned their peace and she was happy for them. She held no more regrets where they were concerned. "Officer Sun," Pilot said and broke the stream of thought that circled through her head. "What is it Pilot?" Of all the creatures that had called Moya home, Pilot had come the closest to understanding her. He had known the old and new Aeryn Sun. Yet he still did not address her by her first name. She pushed the thought aside. "Moya will enter Earth's orbit in fifteen microts, I suspect you have some unfinished business to attend to." She smiled to herself. He was more perceptive than he let on. "Thank you Pilot. I will take that into consideration."
"Aeryn we need to talk." John Crichton stood a small boy trapped in a man's body. The women he had cared for on Earth had all prepared him in one way or another to love this one. He could not let her go and he could not make her stay. She knew what he was going to ask. The look on her face suggested she was deep in thought. Nevertheless, she feigned ignorance. "About what?" Neither of them spoke for what seemed like an eternity. One too scared to hear the question and another frightened to know the answer. "Will you?....I can't, I'm sorry." She turned and ran with all her might out of the room. She couldn't do it, it was too much too fast. Was it? Crichton stood speechless. In what seemed like a moment, he had lost everything again. Then he heard the pounding of footsteps moving towards him. Aeryn came dashing down the corridor, her face swelled with tears. "Frell you Crichton! I hate you!" She buried her fists into his chest and threw him against the wall.
Crichton's world went spinning as the air was forced from his lungs and his thoughts clouded. Aeryn dropped to the ground next to him and sobbed. She looked towards him and silently formed the words, "Stay with me?"
Pilot watched with alarm as his two last crew members laid still on the ground. He thought it better not to intervene.
John wanted to get up but the sebacean's strength and fists rendered him unable to move. Aeryn rose first and quickly left the area. It seemed as if he had lain there an eternity when Pilot announced that he could go. He stood slowly, feeling the bruises that had formed with every step. He had already packed his things. There was only one thing missing.
Jack Crichton sat silently in his office overlooking the beaches of Sydney. A memory from long ago surfaced. John, his son, his greatest acheivment. They had spent many days by the beach when John was a child. Before his son had become a man. Before his son had gone. He imagined for a moment that John was still with him and he could almost see it. His mind could not comprehend what he saw. The figment of his imagination was real. John Crichton was standing in front of his father for the first time in too many years. Tears poured out as father embraced son. "Dad, I missed you so much." John's hard face curled into a smile as all the emotions gushed to the surface. But Jack Crichton knew something was wrong. As happy as his son looked, there seemed to be an emptiness behind his eyes. They would have time to talk about that. All the time in the world. "Dad, I can't stay." The words hit both of them equally hard. Jack saw the uncertainty in his son's face, but ! his mind was made up. "There's someone up there waiting for me dad. I can't lose her, not again. I'm sorry to come and go like this but I had to see you one last time. I can't put Moya at risk." Jack stuttered, "Moya?" John reached for his father and put something in his hand. "What is this son?" "A communicator, as long as you keep that we can talk. As long as I don't stray too far." Jack smiled, "So this is for a woman eh, she must be something special." "Unique in the universe," John said. "I am very proud of you son and I love you very much." "I love you too dad." Jack watched as his son walked down the beach and out of his life again. He would not trade these moments for anything. He looked again but John Crichton was gone.
Aeryn looked down at earth from her spot on the terrace. As much as it pained her to think of the billions of people like Crichton down there, she could not look away. She got up and made her way to Pilot's command room. There, she nestled herself against his console. She let herself drift into a restless sleep while the sound of Pilot's breathe calmed her wounded body.
John Crichton, Astronaut, stood once again within the living walls of Moya. He looked down at everything that he was leaving behind and once again doubted himself. "What if she doesn't want me anymore." She had let him go. Maybe there was nothing left to save. Something inside told him there was.
She walked unsuspectingly onto the terrace. A place that harbored many memories for her. She fought to control the panic that rushed through her body. He was back. He was standing right there in front of her, his gaze fixed on the planet below. His hands were clenched into tight fists. He turned at her entrance and faced her. She could not bear to look him in the eyes but her legs would not let her run. "Go home John," she muttered and looked down at her feet. "Just go."
He moved towards her and placed his hands in hers. "I am home." She managed to look him in the eyes. He couldn't mean that, she knew how much he missed Earth. Her surprise turned instinctively to anger. "No, no, that is your home. That is where you belong. You belong down there and I belong up here!" He came closer.
"You are my home Aeryn. Wherever you are is where I belong." She looked into his eyes again and knew he meant it. She wanted him to mean it more than she could bear.
His head filled with hopefulness but also fear. With those words he had shut the door on everything that he had longed for. Everything that was certain. He looked to her.
She could not stop the tears from coming. They ran down her face and slipped against her lips. She smiled in spite of all the fear she felt. That smile that he loved so much. The smile that was meant only for him. She pulled his body against hers and held him tighter than she had ever held anyone. He had sacrificed everything for her. Only for her. He met the strength of her embrace. In that moment, something inside, a remnant of the empty soldier, broke away. That last bit of her old self that she had held onto for so long was finally gone. He had told her once that she could be so much more. For the first time, she truly understood what that felt like. They kissed, and what passed between them was stronger than anything they could ever be apart. "You are my home John Crichton."
Jack Crichton stood bewildered for the second time that day. He was waiting in a secluded clearing outside of Sydney. Up in the sky, he thought he had seen something. Something very big. Then it had vanished. He could hardly contain the joy that he had felt when his son's voice had come from the small device. It had directed him to this place. Away from prying eyes and the dangers of the modern world.
He could hardly recognize the Farscape module that had landed before him. It seemed to be the same design, but strange modifications had changed it drastically. A tall, beautiful woman had stepped out with his son. She had the body and posture of a soldier, but the smile she held on her face emanated warmth. She looked suspiciously towards him as if she had seen him before. John appeared to be the only one able to speak. "Dad, I want you to meet Aeryn Sun." She looked uncertainly at Crichton and spoke quietly to him in a language Jack found impossible to understand. John smiled reassuringly at her as if he understood every word. She turned back to him and ever so slowly thrust her hand out to him. Jack froze and she immediately looked back to John. He realized that she wanted to shake hands and responded with his own. She accepted it and the tenseness seemed to leave her. Aeryn Sun opened her mouth to speak. After much concentration and practice in her head, Aeryn said "Hello," and Jack Crichton understood.
