But when Chiana got there, she saw John sitting in the chamber, his body
shaking, some weird images flickering on a large screen, and Pilot busy
ignoring Crichton. “John, can I sit with you?” Chiana put her hand on his
shoulder.
John’s first impulse was to reject Chiana, but he didn’t. “Yes.”
Through her own tears, Chiana could see John grieving. “Zhaan was loved by
us all. We miss her terribly.”
“Yes, but I drove the final nail in her coffin. If only I….” John turned
away from Chiana.
“We’re all to blame. We’ve all caused her pain. I don’t know what to do
either.”
“Pip, you never did anything to harm Zhaan. You’ve made mistakes, we’ve all
made mistakes, but you never harmed Zhaan. She wouldn’t have been so ill
if I hadn’t killed Aeryn. At the end, I had to investigate this frelling
wormhole instead of getting her safely to the fertile planet. So you see, I
am to blame, completely.”
“John, it was her choice to save Aeryn. And how do you know we wouldn’t
have collided with that ship anyway?”
“That’s something I’ll never know, but I stopped Pilot from going to the
planet. It was only microts, but it could have made all the difference.
“Pip, can you do something for me, us? I want to have a service for Zhaan.
I don’t feel right about not doing anything. Can you help me convince the
others? I can’t face Stark alone.”
Jool watched as Chiana and John left Pilot’s chamber. She settled in to
watch The Three Stooges. “Finally, something I can enjoy.”
Jool was the last person Chiana wanted to be with at this time, and yet, it
was as if they were joined at the hip. “Go away! Mop the floors, wash the
dishes, do anything, but leave me alone!” Chiana did not give Jool the
opportunity to respond. She ran to Pilot’s chamber, to get away, to be
alone with Pilot in her grief.
